Now available: Comprehensive UPRISE Project Presentation

The UPRISE project was recently presented by project coordinator, Dr. Alba Ruiz Gaitán, during the ExpoHealthNet (EHN) kick-off meeting, held on 25 September 2025 in Barcelona. The presentation is now publicly available and offers a comprehensive overview of the project’s scientific foundations, research strategies, and anticipated broader impact.

On the slides, downloadable below in a PDF format, the UPRISE project is presented in detail, explaining how exposure to ultrafine particles (UFPs) and micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) during pregnancy may interfere with fetal development and increase the risk of preterm birth. The presentation outlines the project’s multidisciplinary scientific approach - combining environmental exposure assessment, epidemiology, toxicology, and health impact analysis - as well as its biological studies examining placental mechanisms through in vitro and ex vivo models, multi-omics analyses, and quantitative detection of UFPs and MNPs. It also describes the scenario-based research framework for identifying pathways that lead to adverse birth outcomes and highlights the project’s broader political and societal impact through stakeholder engagement, training activities, communication efforts, and its contribution to evidence-based policymaking.
